Job Description

Description Performs parks maintenance and inspection functions and acts as the assistant to the crew supervisor. Prepares and maintains the ball fields; maintains trails; maintains parks and park equipment; supervises seasonal employees; manages turfs and landscapes; recommends supplies to be ordered; performs irrigation work; monitors staff vehicles and equipment. The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time. Prepares and maintains athletic fields; measures and sets the bases and pitching mound; mows, removes leaves and litter; applies pesticides and herbicides; fertilizes and seeds and trims plants. Maintains parks and trails; trims trees; removes dead trees; removes litter and leaves; mows and trims; applies herbicides and pesticides; installs and repairs irrigation systems and checks trails and parks for safety issues. Coordinates special events conducted in the park system; sets up for the event; works each event to assist the client with any issues; supervises community service and inmates; and cleans up after the event. Checks all equipment by conducting an inventory and performing regular inspections; evaluates maintenance and repair needs; and performs the maintenance and/or repairs. Provides customer service; interacts with citizens in the parks and trails; answers questions and provides assistance as needed. ADDITIONAL DUTIES Substitutes for staff and supervisor, as needed. Cleans up after floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other emergencies or special events. Stays current with industry standards, technology and equipment by reading and attending training courses. Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned. Education and Experience High School or GED and one to three years' related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above Certifications/Licenses Playground Safety Inspector Certification issued by NRPA or similar organization. Pesticide and Fertilizer Application Chain saw safety CPR and First Aid certification Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record according to City criteria. Job Knowledge Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. Complete comprehension of the subject area to solve common and unusual problems, able to advise on technical matters, and serve as a resource on the subject for others. ReadingBasic: Ability to recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words. Writing Basic: Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Math Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Communication Skills Decisions regarding interpretation of existing policies may be made. Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas. Independence and Decision-Making Normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Special projects are managed with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically. Technical Skills Comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Fiscal Responsibilities No budgetary/fiscal responsibility. Supervisory ResponsibilitiesSupervises and monitors performance for a regular group of employees or department. Provides input on hiring, discipline, work objectives/goals, performance evaluation and work assignments. Typically, a first line supervisor. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work requires heavy physical effort, exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly. Adequate vision, hearing and talking to drive and communicate effectively with others. Frequent standing, walking, carrying, pushing/pulling, bending and handling. Occasional fine dexterity, sitting, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and climbing NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time. Regular and predictable attendance is expected. May experience frequent time pressure, change of tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. May experience occasional irregular work schedule/overtime. May rarely perform multiple tasks simultaneously. MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARETypically requires use of common office equipment, including computer and related software and hardware; groundskeeping and maintenance equipment such as Truck, Dump Truck, Chain Saw, Weed Eater, Lawn Mower, Tractor, skill saw, Table saw, Drill Press, Drills, Reciprocal saw, Hammers, Pole Saw, Hedge Trimmer, Pesticide Sprayer, Snow Plow, Tiller, Cultivator, Sod Cutter, Generator, Bobcat, Blower, Gator and any other equipment as appropriate or required. WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work is performed outdoors where there is daily exposure to respiratory and physical hazards, extreme temperatures, noise and vibration, and wetness/humidity. There is frequent exposure to mechanical hazards and to physical danger or abuse. There is occasional exposure to chemical and electrical hazards. There is rare exposure to fire hazards, explosives, and communicable diseases. The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hearing and eye protection, hard hat, safety vest, steel toe shoes, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
